East Texas was one of the best kept secrets in North America, but the word is out now. This area lying to the east of Dallas, is one of the the most sparsely populated areas of Texas. The area offers a paradise for the sportsman, as it has many of the state's top fishing lakes. Hunting is also enjoyed by many during the season. There are several medium sized cities such as Longview, Tyler, Marshall, Mt Pleasant, Paris and Nacogdoches, but the bulk of the communities are small. Big Sandy and Hawkins are of this order. They offer families the pleasure of rural small town life, but also the shopping convenience of nearby Tyler and Longview. Hawkins and Big Sandy's schools offer good academic and sports programs.
